Amsterdam, 18 April 2025 — AMG Critical Materials N.V. (“AMG”, EURONEXT AMSTERDAM: “AMG”) announces that AMG Lithium BV has signed an exclusive agreement with Grupo Lagoa to become the first producer of spodumene concentrate in Portugal with an initial capacity of 8,000–9,000 tons per annum by the first half of 2027, pending government approvals. This exclusive agreement builds upon the positive results from our joint pre-engineering efforts since the first announcement of our partnership on August 17, 2023.
The capital expenditures of approximately 10 million Euros for this commercially sized pilot plant will be provided by AMG in the form of a loan to Grupo Lagoa. In exchange, AMG secures accelerated access to local production of spodumene in Europe to supply its lithium refinery in Germany. The supply from the pilot plant will be based on market prices. Furthermore, this agreement contains terms for the delivery of ore from Grupo Lagoa should AMG Lithium devise to build an industrial size spodumene plant at the Lagoa mine, where exploration is ongoing.
This partnership presents a unique opportunity for both parties, as we can significantly leverage AMG’s engineering and operating experience in Brazil due to the similarities of our mine and operations there. Grupo Lagoa operates a pegmatite mine supplying the Portuguese ceramic and glass industry since 1984. Leveraging our experience in Brazil, the process will allow for the continued supply of ceramic and glass materials to local customers, very competitive production costs for both feldspar and lithium, and a limited impact on the local environment and communities.
Fabiano Costa, President of AMG Brazil and Managing Director of AMG Lithium BV, commented, “Our partnership with Grupo Lagoa is a very significant step in establishing a European spodumene production base, building upon longstanding local experience and existing infrastructure. Producing spodumene concentrate and further processing it locally in both Brazil and Europe to supply our battery-grade lithium hydroxide plant in Bitterfeld, Germany is a key part of AMG Lithium’s overall integration strategy.”

Amsterdam, 18 September 2024 — AMG Critical Materials N.V. (“AMG”, EURONEXT AMSTERDAM: “AMG”) hosted the opening of its lithium hydroxide refinery in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Saxony-Anhalt in Germany earlier today. AMG Lithium B.V., which houses all of AMG’s lithium activities, has commissioned production of battery-grade lithium hydroxide at the first of its five modules planned for the site.
Annual capacity of one module is 20,000 tons per year – enough for the batteries of around 500,000 electric vehicles (“EVs”). AMG’s first module is sold out and by 2030, AMG’s concept is to expand annual production up to 100,000 metric tons of battery-grade lithium hydroxide depending on market conditions. The recent Benchmark forecast, which has been revised downward, projects total demand for lithium in batteries in Europe to be 700k metric tons in 2030. AMG’s potential production of 100k metric tons (assuming all 5 modules), represents 14% market share of the projected applicable market in Europe for 2030.
Dr. Heinz Schimmelbusch, Chairman of the Management Board and CEO of AMG N.V. said, “With the refinery, we are the first mover, making a decisive contribution to securing the supply of the critical raw material lithium for the industry in Germany and Europe. The establishment of our own complete lithium value chain also contributes to the European Critical Raw Materials Act and offers greater independence for raw materials and critical materials.”
Dr. Stefan Scherer, Managing Director of AMG Lithium GmbH, commented “AMG is forward looking – developing cutting-edge technology and materials to support the market development of next generation, sulfur-based all-solid-state-batteries closely together with the main players in the industry.”
Lithium hydroxide is an important raw material for the production of cathode materials for batteries in EVs and thus for the path to climate-neutral mobility. With the refinery in Bitterfeld, AMG is primarily aiming to supply customers who manufacture in Europe.

Amsterdam, 3 July 2024 — AMG Critical Materials N.V.’s (“AMG”, EURONEXT AMSTERDAM: “AMG”) subsidiary Graphit Kropfmühl and BASF have entered into an innovative agreement to reduce their product carbon footprint. Under this agreement, BASF will supply renewable energy certificates (so called “Guarantees of Origin”) to Graphit Kropfmühl’s production site in Hauzenberg, Germany.
BASF supports Graphit Kropfmühl, a subsidiary of AMG Critical Materials N.V., with innovative renewable electricity concept:
- BASF to supply renewable energy certificates to its supplier and partner Graphit Kropfmühl
- Graphit Kropfmühl to reduce the product carbon footprint (PCF) of graphite produced in Hauzenberg, Germany, by at least 25 percent
- BASF to use the reduced PCF graphite as raw material for Neopor® with a reduced product carbon footprint
A Guarantee of Origin (“GoO”) certifies that a given amount of power was produced in a particular renewable power plant, thus providing a tangible proof of the usage and source of the renewable power. By using these GoOs, the carbon footprint of graphite produced by Graphit Kropfmühl at the Hauzenberg site will be reduced by at least 25 percent. This graphite will then be used by BASF as a raw material for the production of Neopor®, which will therefore also have a lower product carbon footprint. BASF’s Neopor® is used as raw material for insulation products for buildings.
“With this innovative concept, we act hand in hand with our customers and beyond the boundaries of our own factory gates to effectively protect the climate. By deepening our collaboration with Graphit Kropfmühl, we are able to accelerate the journey towards net zero together,” said Horatio Evers, Managing Director of BASF Renewable Energy GmbH.
Yong Liu, Director of Global Direct Procurement Plastic Additives at BASF, added: “This is a win-win for BASF and Graphit Kropfmühl – a pragmatic approach with a positive impact that will strengthen our long-standing partnership with Graphit Kropfmühl and shows that we are pulling together when it comes to sustainability. Neopor® and Neopor® BMB are solutions with an oustanding insulation performance and sustainability profile. The use of graphite with a reduced product carbon footprint from our partner Graphit Kropfmühl is a consequent further step on our journey to net zero. BASF is also working on further such projects with other partners.”
“We are excited to deepen our partnership with BASF by reducing our product carbon footprint (PCF) by at least 25 percent and moving towards a more sustainable future together,” said Thomas Junker, CEO of Graphit Kropfmühl.
On its journey towards climate neutrality, BASF has set itself ambitious goals and is striving to achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. One major lever to achieve these targets is the use of renewable power. BASF has therefore conducted significant investments into renewable power sources over the past years.
AMG was founded on the principle that CO2 abatement targets would create increased criticality for specialty materials. This strategic focus is encapsulated in the company’s Enabled CO2 Reduction Portfolio concept (“ECO2RP”) at the level of AMG’s customers. Its strategic focus is fully aligned with and supports the EU Taxonomy. As a subsidiary of AMG, Graphit Kropfmühl supports the parent company’s commitment to reduce its direct CO2 emissions by 20 percent from a baseline of 2019 until 2030. This corresponds to a total reduction of 125,000 tons of CO2.
